I have a person Joseph Stuart, an ancestor, who born in Devon, married and moved to Broadwater, Sussex. His occupation "gardener" and his son Percy Robert was an undergardener. By chance searching military details I lucked out that they had moved to Ireland.

On further checking the 1911 Ireland census shows Joseph, his wife, daughter and 2 sons at Howth Demense, Howth Castle Gardens, Dublin. Occupation Gardener and undergardener. He must have been good to acquire that job!

I have googled Howth Castle but there is little to be found except it is a Gothic structure and was last renovated in 1910 which fits with this move over to Ireland. It is apparently famous for its rhododendron gardens. I can't find a photo of it anywhere and was hoping someone would steer me in the right direction.

Hidden under wild ferns on Howth

Perhaps try Google Images for "Howth Castle"?

Thanks Peter. Still haven't found pics of gardens, but found a link to Lutyens so will explore that further. I keep forgetting about the images link on google. Must keep my thinking cap on more!
