I don't think simply renaming a file will work.

I would suggest exporting your data from Brothers Keeper as a gedcom file then import the gedcom into the new programme.

I use Brothers Keeper and use the export facility to create a gedcom file which I then import into the Genes Reunited website.

In the help index for FTM 2005 there is a detailed explantation for how to import files into Family Tree Maker.

'You may have research on another file, for example, PAF or a GEDCOM, or another Family Tree Maker file, that you want to import to your Family File. Family Tree Maker allows you to combine files. etc. etc.'

Before you begin to export and import files or combine files, make a copy of the original files and store them elsewhere in your computer. I've heard horror stories from other researchers who didn't backup their files before embarking on a path that led to distruction.
