I cannot help specifically, but there are quite a few with both spelling who appear in the BT passenger lists which are on findmypast - if any are the people form whom you are searching, it would at least give you a starting point.

Hi,
I'm intered in Wrixon's generally who may have arrived in Canada from Dorset (as opposed to Ireland) as a result of say the Fishing Industry or Emigration.
Common forenames from my Dorset Wrixon's are Joseph, Thomas, David & Robert.

My great grandfather was born in England in 1834/5 and emigrated to Newfoundland which was a British colony at the time. It became a Canadian province in 1949. I believe he was christened John Wrixen on August 24, 1834 in Burton Bradstock in Dorset, son of Robert Wrixon and Ann Gerrard.
The Wrixon's of Newfoundland were all associated with the fishing industry and I have all the family details of John's descendants. I don't have much information on his ancestors. The family "story" is that there were three brothers in England. John who went to Newfoundland, another who was a jeweler or tailor and a third who was hung as a sheep thief or highwayman.

Hi B,
I will take a look for you and see what I can find out about your John. Burton Bradstock is one of the villages that regulary come up when I look into the Wrixons.
BTW: Have you had a look at the Dorset OPC site?

Hi Alex,
It turned out to be fairly easy to find info on your Wrixons! The site of the Grand Banks Newfoundland Genealogy site provided access to all kinds of tidbits! Looks like John settled in Burin, Borgeo, Grand Banks Newfoundland.
http://ngb.chebucto.org/index.html He was in one of the best places on the planet to fish in a hidden cove teeming with fish.
The first mention of him: 1884 Burin - Methodist Census, SPOON COVE
WRIXON, John and Elizabeth (Wife). Susan, Robert, Richard, Joseph, Herbert, William. Unfortunately no ages listed!
He is buried in the Epworth United Cemetary (Epworth in Burin) and lived to 84!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~From Joseph Small’s Diary 1925
Sarah [Anderson] married Samuel Wrixon, an Englishman, and a very nice man. He was a great reader. Mrs. [Sarah] Wrixon died in the late seventies and left some family. I know of one, Nellie, who is somewhere in the States, unmarried a year or two ago. Samuel Wrixon moved to Sydney and then to the States where he married again. He died only a year ago.
I am certain I saw mention of the Wrixon Family History in Newfoundland having been written already. So if you can get a hold of that....
I can try to see if I can find immigration records. That may take a while!
Anyhow this ought to get you started. Just googling Wrixon and epworth or burin ought to get you more results.
Happy Researching!
Thanks Scouscan
You are right on with all your information on the Wrixons in NFLD. The baby boy 4 days old shown on the 1921 Census as the son of Herbert Wrixon was my father Eugene. We have lots of info for the family on this side of the ocean but can't seem to go back any further on the other side of the Atlantic than John who was born in 1834/5. I'm not even certain that he's the John Wrixon (Wrixen) christened in Burton Bradstock.
BW Glad I found the right ones! For your brits you will have to get the birth certificate for your Dorset John to get his parents' names and where they hailed from. I am so grateful our censuses give the full birthdate-makes life so much easier! Just out of curiosity, what was his mother's maiden name?
Cheers!
PS the family history that has been compiled already-does it start from NL or sooner? Might be worth poking through it. The Newfoundland Ancestor, a quarterly publication, featured the Burin Wrixons in edition 11/4/157. In 12/03/25 the inscriptions on the Burin Cemetery Headstones. There's an index for towns and both Burin and Borgeo have several diaries and articles included!
There's bound to be clues in those articles.
The record shows that John was christened in Burton Bradstock Dorset on August 24th, 1834 and that his parents were Robert Wrixon and Ann Gerrard.
I note that you are from Ontario too. I live in Burlington, where are you? Do you have a connection with the Wrixon family?
Hi BW
NC = Nation's Capital. You may know it as Taxland;)
No Wrixon link-I like to take a break from my own stuff and help others out. My Canadians are french who came here in the 1600's. Dpes your public library have a subscription to Ancestry.ca? If it does you can certify if you have the correct person by checking birth records with mom's maiden name as Gerrard. Check it out!
If the library does not let me know.
Cheers!
Hi Alex:
I noticed on an old posting from 2006 that you mentionned that your wife is a Wrixon.
I have been trying to trace the lineage of John Wrixon (Wrixen) christened in Burton Bradstock in 1834. His father was Robert Wrixon and his mother was Ann Gerrard.
I have found a Robert Wrixon who was christened April 13, 1808 in Netherbury Dorset. I understand that this is not far from Burton Bradstock. He would have been age 26 in 1834 and cold have been John's father.
This Robert Wrixon was the son of Robert Wrixon born about 1769 of Netherbury and Betty Wrixon born about 1773 of Netherbury. Their children were John (cir 1795), John (cir 1801/2), James (cir 1804/5) and Robert 1808.
I wonder if this is my family line. My great-grandfather was born in 1834 in that area and emigrated to Newfoundland as i have indicated in previous postings.
Any thoughts?
Hi Scousecan
I have a French Canadian connection as well. My mother was a Rioux and the family history on her side has been traced all the way back to the late 1500's in France. Her ancestor was the first signeur in Trois Pistoles in Quebec and came over in the 1600's. The Rioux family history is very well documented.
Hi Brian,
Yes, my wife is Donna Wrixon I've traced her family back to c1750 and Dorset Wrixons back to the 1500. However, the Dorset Wrixons all seem to live around the Bridport, Poorstock (Powerstock) & Netherbury areas (Bridport is close enough to include Burton Bradstock). And they like the name John so it gets very confusing as to who is who. They also like the trades of Mariners & Carters so they can have kids all over the place.
If you send me your email address I can send you a powerpoint file that will show you what I have. I will see if I can trace your John / Robert back for you from this side of the pond. I do have a Gerrard from Burton Bradstock linked already but it's not Ann. Having said that the date is right so it could be a brother.
My email address is alex<dot>nicole38<at>gmail<dot>com
Hi Brian,
I've been looking in my PowerPoint file after having a quick look on the LDS site. The following came up from the site:
Mary Ann Wrixen, Female, Christening: 04 DEC 1831 Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England
John Wrixen, Male, Christening: 24 AUG 1834 Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England
Eliza Wrixen, Female, Christening: 24 AUG 1834 Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England
Thomas Wrixen, Male, Christening: 10 MAR 1839 Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England
Father: Robert Wrixon
Mother: Ann Gerrard
Now I have a Mary Ann, Eliza & Thomas WRIXTON born 1831, 1834 & 1842 born in Burton Bradstock in my file. What is interesting is the father is shown as a John or William WRIXTON but simple by the fact that I've recorded two forenames shows that I was not sure. But also John or William is shown with a sister Elizabeth who is listed as married to a GERRARD (who is also shown as the the brother of William GERRARD). So your Ann GERRARD could be the sister to William & the Unk GERRARD.
BTW my John or William WRIXTON and Elizabeth WRIXTON are shown as the children of John & Sarah WRIXTON. John (the father) is shown as being born in Milton, Dorset c1765.
Hope this is of interest.
