Has anyone researching the Fretwell family from Yorkshire come across my my ancestor John Fretwell who married Mary Odell in 1773 in Barford, Warwickshire. The family roots appear to be in Yorkshire and I can find no trace of John in Warwickshire before his marriage although his wife's family was in Barford for several generations. His wife was born in 1743 and I'd guess he'd be about the same age. Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks, George. One of these could well be my kin and by process of elimination, I'm trying to make sure I have the right one. Unfortunately, most of us Fretwells seem to have the wanderlust so we're all over the place, and John was and is a particularly popular family name. It was good of you to take note of these 2 and pass them along.
Good luck with your own research.

I hope you don't find a connection to the Fretwells from Penistone and the surrounding areas of Cawthorne and Hoylandswaine.
I have connections to them and between 1700 and 1800 it's near impossible to tell who was related to who. There are so many repeated names from one generation to the next over that time and brothers all seemed to name their sons exactly the same, the most common names being Joshua and John Fretwell.
So far I've manage to narrow my family down to two possible branches: one which goes (going backwards intime through the Fretwell name):
(1)Julia, Joshua, John, Joshua or
(2)Julia, Joshua, Joshua, Joshua.
It's certainly giving me a head ache....I know at least one other person who has the same connection too and they can't figure it out either.

Just come accross your thread on website. I have been researching my Fretwell family history and John Fretwell is my GGGGGrandad on my grandmothers mothers side. I have come to a complete standstill in tracing John Fretwells father. Have you had any luck since you posted this thread???

Hi,
I have been researching the Fretwell Family from Warwickshire for some time and I do have a person by the name of Lucy Fretwell who married a Samson Edwin Tasker. She died young and he went on to re-marry a Victoria M King and they emigrated to Saskatchewan in 1921.
I have not really gone back to all of the Warwickshire info but if anyone else knows of any brothers or sisters of Lucy Fretwell from Warwickshire I would be interested to know.
If you are looking for the Tasker side of the family I have quite a lot of information I can share with you.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello,
my 5x greatgrandfather was Phillip Fretwell, his daughter Ann born 1740 in Bellowsize, married William Hunt. What we haven't been able to find is Ann's mothers name or other sibblings.
The other family would be the Pettler's. John and Ann Robinson Pettler lived in Fridaythorpe. Hannah Pettler Married John Hunt. What I have looked for is again, trying to trace Hannah's sibblings. I found them only in one census, and then it seems they dropped out of sight.
Thank you for your time.

I see that there seems to have been not much found on Fretwell's since my posting in 09. I have still been trying to find out more info on Ann Fretwell Hunt and her father Phillip. Ann was born in 1740. Her possible wedding date To william Hunt was about 1760-61. First son Robert was born June 1762, and last son John born April 1780. Ann died Oct. 1780 Bellowsize,Yorkshire. We have come across possible info that her father Phillip was born about 1691, and that his father was Thomas Fretwell. I was hoping to find Facts to clear up the questions. So far I have been looking in Ancestry.Any Help would be gratefully accepted. Thank you.

Hi,
I posted before about Fretwell/Tasker family of which Mary Odell was part of it but never heard back until I received an e-mail from this site tonight. Actually I had forgotten I had signed on because it was so long since anyone wrote about the family which I have researched. The Fretwells were originally from Warwickshire but ended up in London as most folks did then when they came out of the countryside when times were hard. I have collected a lot of info but if you are able to be more specific I can check out what I have. I look forward to hearing from you.
Interestingly enough the family married into the Tasker family, who in turn went to Saskatchewan and then to Minnesota and Oregon.
Let me know if I can help in any way.

Hello Carol,
I wish I had more information then what I do, as I would have much moe to go on. Phillip Fretwell born in England (we think Wroot,Lincolinshire,orFinningley,Nottinghamshire) had a daughter Ann born 1740 in England. Married a William Hunt assumed about 1761. The reason being their first child a son,John was born June of 1762. They had a total of eight children;the last John; being born April of 1780. Ann died Oct. 1780 in Bellowsize Yorkshire,England. A family member going through other families info on Ancestry added the fact that Phillip's father was Thomas Fretwell born 1654 Finningley. Going thought Ancestry I have had little to no info on Ann Fretwell Hunt. ANY help would be gratefully accepted. Anything to send me in the right direction...Anyone?????
Thank you.
