Tracing Great Grandmother

In 1901 census gt grd mother is shown as Beatrice Stephenson born 1888 in Gaywood Norfolk. However I am unable to trace any birth certificate for her and she is not in parish records or on 1891 census. Her marriage certificate states her father was not known and we have no knowledge of her mothers name.
The 1901 census states her as being the niece of Stephen Grimes.
Can any one point me in the right direction?:confused:

It might be longwinded but if it was me I would start tracing the siblings of Stephen Grimes. If he had a wife I would check her siblings too.

It's possible that Stephenson was not Beatrice's birthname, rather the name of her step-father.

I'm not sure where the Guiltcross district is in relation to Gaywood, but the certificate might be worth a gamble.

It's around 40 miles from Gaywood to places listed as being in the Guiltcross district.

THe place of birth in the 1901 census would have to be fairly inaccurately quoted for it to be this one, I think.

(Unless there's more than 1 Gaywood, which in Norfolk, is always possible!).

There's only one Gaywood in Norfolk, it's in Freebridge Lynn.

You could try searching freebmd for all Beatrice births in Freebridge Lynn from 1887-1890 and see if you can cross refer them against the 1891 census.

Does Beatrice's agein the 1901 census, her marriage and at death confirm a year of birth as 1888-ish?

From information given, she would appear to be illegitimate; but some marriage certificates just dont record a father's name is the dad had died.

Have you tried workhouse records to see if a Beatrice was born/admitted there?

The 1891 census RG12/1567 f6 p5 for Gaywood
shows Stephen GRIMES, 63, bn Heacham, wf Pleasance 66, bn Kings Lynn and their son Stephen Edward GRIMES, 21, bn Kings Lynn

Go back 10 years and the 1881 census shows Stephen as having a couple of sisters - could either be the mother of Beatrice?

In 1901 was Stephen married? If so, what was his wife's name and did she have a sister who could have been Beatrice's mum?

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions. I have ordered marriage cert of Stephen Grimes - he married someone called Harriet who is the same age as his sister also called Harriet...so this might be a lead.
What is making this hard is that nothing flows. I think you are on to something and then try to trace it back/fwd 10yrs and it doesn't work out or they don't seem to exist.
I am going to have to spend more time looking at the siblings and hopefully he marriage cert might shed some light.

I've just found a Stephen Grimes married to Harriett Turner in September 1898 in Brentford.Would that be him?
