PATTBERG - First generation Brit on 1 census only?

Does anyone have clues on the mobility of (anilin?) dyers? Anilin dying technology was very new at the time. My Heinrich Pattberg (b. Prussia 1815) is listed in the 1861 census as an Chemist at a print works in Lancashire with issue. My sister has the marriage certificate from Manchester to a Mary Heap. My problem is finding him prior to or after the 1861. It seems I've reached a dead end unless someone can point another direction to look. His first issue is my gg gm can be followed easily after mariage.

He should appear in the 1851 census somewhere, but do think of variations on spelling. I would not expect him to be much different to PATTBERG in 1851 as his naturalisation papers date to 1846 giving that spelling. Do you have the family in 1871? Henry isn't with them. It may be worth getting his death certificate as it may explain his whereabouts. For instance he may be in an infirmary somewhere.

His name was indexed as Pattherg and the place of birth as Preußen. In the end I resorted to searching for Henry Pat*, birth 1815 +/- 5 years with no birthplace given.

Thank you so much, I'm feeling a bit lost and inadequate, how did you find the B's & D's? I've been searching through Free BMD, & The genealogist and found nothing. I hate to tell you how much all those attempts cost ... all for nothing. Is there a smart way to search through those records? Would it be wise to invest in census CD's?

I searched FreeBMD selecting all events, all areas & using the search term Pattb* (I also tried Patb* but none of your family showed up)

BTW I pointed out that Henry's birthplace was indexed as PreuBen because that wasn't what the census page says. I realized that, in effect they were one & the same, but it explains why putting Prussia in to the census search wouldn't work.

Just a quick note ... have info on Henry as well as parentage. Will fish it out if you like and send you copies ... Also have his Naturalization Certificate ...

Wuppertal is from whence he came - Prussia .. now part of West Germany
