I would be everso grateful if someone who has access to the 1841 Devon census could do a look-up (or two) for me.

I have found a George Down aged 80 (born Witheridge) married to Mary ? aged 46 (born Chulmleigh) on 1851 census living in Garden Square Exeter. Under Exeter St Kerrian and St Pancras according to 1851.

I have been unable to trace their marriage (I have printouts from Devon FHS but nothing fits) or George's baptism in Witheridge (did he get his age wrong?), or Mary's in Chulmleigh (too many possibilities without a maiden name).

They were not on the 1841 census in Witheridge or East or West Worlington.

Thanks in anticipation!

Have had a look at the 1841 census for Chulmleigh, but no George or Mary Down, I'm afraid. Did you get the 1851 census entry from the LDS CD? If so, there could have been a transcription error and George's age may well have been transcribed incorrectly. However, it is quite possible that this is a second (or third!) marriage, hence the age difference.

Sorry not to be more helpful |shakehead

Thanks Ann - any help is help! Thanks for checking Chulmleigh - it at least rules that out or they could have married after 1841. I wondered about the age difference - more than one marriage is certainly a possibility.

I have the 1851 census CD but I have seen the original and is clearly says 80 which was a great disappointment I can tell you!
