hi can anyone tell me what a mater was my g,g,g grandfather was a mater on his sons marriage certificate thanks to anyone who can tell me
Is it possible it could be Meter?

Unless he was some sort of animal breeder I wonder if this is not a misprint, either for Master or possibly for Mather (mower)

Have you found him on any census, which might also provide a clue?

The only ones I can find on old occupations are
A Mather, another word for Mawyer or Mower
A Master, of a vessel
A Maler, who made leather travelling bags
What area did he come from, it may be a local term.
There may be some clues here

Seriously I'd see what the censuses say - "mater" doesn't sound right to me.

hi thanx for all replies it is definatley mater on certificate the marriage took place in aston birmingham in 1838 haven`t as yet found the father on a census although does not say deceased on marriage cert so i will assume he is still alive in 1838 oh well i will keep looking once again many thanks

What is his name? Perhaps we can try and find him on the 1841 census.

Is this him? Profession looks like Wire Worker to me.

hi many thanks i have found this census and im not sure if it is him as i cannot be sure because his son is not on the census with him my james had a son willliam and possibly edward james and charles the boys were born in 1812 1819 1814 and 1822 so its possible that the boys were all al married before 1841 william was he maried in 38 my sister has looked at her copy of the marriage cert and we have both said it could be plater not mater but the more i look at it i still think it is mater but thank you anyway
