My great grandfather ARMINE ROBERT MOUNTAIN born 1868 in norfolk, in 1891 he was a convict in Portsea Hampshire Prison.
Is there anyway you can find out what they did and how long they were in prison for?

The National Archives (TNA) has loads of research guides, including this length one on convicts (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=253)
Some convictions and licences are individually indexed in TNA's catalogue (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/default.asp), so it is always worth a search just on the off chance. In the word or phrase field just enter a surname, in the department or series code enter PCOM.
A separate series of records are also indexed and can be found by substituting the department or series code with CRIM.
Note - For anyone idly browsing this thread, you can also find some earlier convictions from the 18th century on the catalogue by enter HO47 in the department or series code.

I too am trying to locate details of a 'Black Sheep's' trial and would like to get a transcript of the trial itself - can anyone point me at a way of obtaining it.
The trial was held in the nineteenth century at Taunton.
