Hi,

I'm trying to find info on my great great grandfather FREDERICK RAYNER born 1865 in Sharnbrook, his father is WILLIAM RAYNER unknown when he was born or who his parents are. I do know that william married a women called Elizabeth but that is all I know, they did have another son callled HENRY.

My great great grandfather Frederick married a Edith Sophia Everett in sept 1888 in London, they had a daughter in the november 1888 called Charlotte Sophia Rayner (my great grandmother), unknown if they had anymore children.

If anyone could help on date's of birth's, marriage's and death's I will be greatful.

Charlotte

Marriage of Frederick and Edith September quarter 1888 Paddington 1a 134. If you apply for the certificate it will give a bit more information.

The IGI has extracted entries for baptisms of both Frederick (Sharnbrook 1867) & Henry (1873 Clapham but born 1868) Rayner, saying their parents were Frederick & Elizabeth Rayner. Regards John

I've seen the 1881 census & Frederick & Henry are with parents William & Elizabeth Rayner, so why are the baptisms say father Frederick. William was born Ongar, Essex & Elizabeth born Sharnbrook, but on later censuses it is Felmersham or Radwell. On 1871 census living in Clapham, Beds, Frederick & Harry are visitors to John Sinfield & wife Maria (ne Hodges) who married at Felmersham in 1852.

But I cannot find William or Frederick & wife Elizabeth on 1871 census - have you ?

This looks like Frederick & Edith in the 1891 census of Islington, but no Charlotte:

RG12/158, folio 38, page 7
48 Stanmore St

Frederick RAYNER Head M 27 Bricklayer Beds Sharnbrook
Edith do Wife M 21 Norfolk Runton

This looks like Charlotte in the 1891 census of Runton, Norfolk:

RG12/1511, folio 81, page 24

James CUTLER Head M 70 Fisherman Norfolk Runton
Mary do Wife M 64 Washwoman do do
Sophia PEARCE Daur W 39 do do do
Rose A do Granddaur S 14 do do
Mary BROWNSELL Granddaur 7 Scholar do do
Charlotte RAYNER Gt Grandaur 2 do do

Frederick and Edith seem to have disappeared after the 1891 census as Charlotte is still with great grandfather James in the 1901 census of Runton (shown as Lottie which fazed me to begin with) on RG13/1825, folio 136, page 25 but Lottie has lost a generation and become a granddaughter and Sophia PEARCE above has become a Stepdaughter and James CUTLER has also acquired a grandson James PEARCE.

I cannot find a death registration for either Frederick or Edith between 1891 and 1901 on the GRO Index. Could they have perhaps emigrated??

Edith Sophia EVERETT is with her grandparents James & Mary CUTLER in the 1881 census of Runton:

RG11/1925, folio 83, page 20

James CUTLER Head Mar 58 Fisherman Norfolk Runton
Mary do Wife Mar 55 Fisherman's wife do do
Charlotte do Daur Unm 16 do do
Sophia PIERCE Stepdaur W 31 Washerwoman do do
Edith S EVERETT Granddaur 10 Scholar do do
Roseanna PIERCE do 4 do do

and also in the 1871 census of Runton:

RG10/1799, folio 81, page 6

James CUTLER Head Mar 49 Fisherman Norfolk Runton
Mary do Wife Mar 46 do do
Sophia EVERETT Daur Unm 21 do do
Charlotte CUTLER Daur 6 Scholar do do
James do Son 5 Scholar do do
Edith S EVERETT Grandaur 4 mo do do

Interesting!!!

I think your next step should be to do as UK suggested and send for Frederick's marriage certificate. It might also be a good idea to send for either Frederick or Henry's birth certificate as well (Frederic John Hodges RAYNER Sep qtr 1864 at Bedford reg district (includes Sharnbrook) vol 3b page 297 and Henry RAYNER Dec qtr 1867 at Bedford reg district vol 3b page 291). I'm pretty certain the Frederic above is yours, given that in the 1871 census when he is visiting John SINFIELD there is a Mary Ann HODGES with them who is a niece.

HTH anyway and good luck.

Hi,

I think the reason why you cant find Charlotte with Frederick and Edith because I have been told by my mother's cousin who is also doing the family tree that Charlotte was living with her grand-grandparents Mary and James Cutler in Norfolk as it showed in 1891 census.

Also what does "do" mean when you have the name of the person, what relation, and age?

It means "ditto" - or "as above".

Beware though, I have seen some people indexed with the surname "Do" instead of their real name because the enumerator had recorded it that way. |shakehead

I've had much problems with the indexing of a local 1841 census (Buckland and Buckland Common in Bucks).

A family might be listed something like.....

Brackley, William
Ann (Do)
James (Do)
Fredk (Do)

You've guessed it...

The index contains Ann William, James William, Fredk William etc.... (and William end's up as the only one indexed under surname Brackley).

I know that's what it says, if you take it literally, but it's a pain in the backside.
