Hello :>)
I'm hoping someone can help find information on my GG Grandfather Edward Oke. He was born in Cheshire, England abt. 1832. He came to Canada in his teens as an orphan and he married Elizabeth Brooks. I'm unable to find any information on the "Oke" family in England.
Any assistance you can provide will be GREATLY appreciated :>)

Hi, welcome to the forum! |wave|
I can't find any OKEs in Cheshire, except for a family living in Birkenhead, Cheshire who were all born on the south coast of England - Cornwall/Devon/Kent. Even looking for variations of the name isn't bringing up any likely candidates, either for your Edward or for any other possible relations. Do you know any other information, other than that he was an orphan, that might help to track him down? What was his occupation? How & when did he go to Canada? Did any siblings go with him? Did he go in a group from an orphanage, or did he just turn up on his own? What religion was he? Are there any names that he gave his children that could be family names? Where did you find the reference to Cheshire as his birthplace?

Quite a few Oak/Oake/Oaks in Cheshire in the 1841 census. Also what about the soundalike Oakey?

Hi :>) Nice to meet you :>) Thanks for getting back to me so quickly :>)

I did find Edward Oke on the Canadian 1911 Census Report. He was born on March 16, 1830 in England and arrived here in Canada around 1848, he would have been 18. I also learned on the same Census report that Elizabeth Brooks also came from England born Mar. 25, 1835 and arrived here in Canada around 1848 as well (I'm unable to verify if they arrived here together). I can't find any passengers lists that indicate either one of them. The two of them got married in Canada on 6 Oct 1856 in Butterfield Corn, Durham, Ontario. I've researched pretty much everything that I can get my hands on, and it appears that Edward probably was an orphan, I'm wondering if she isn't an orphan as well. She's another one that is extremely hard to trace.

A gentleman by the name of Jim Oke posted the following on his family tree:

Edward Oke Born in Eng. about 1835 (this is wrong s/b 1830), location unknown, and reportedly came to Canada as an orphan. He married Elizabeth Brooks in Darlington Twp. about 1856, raised a family there and then went west to homestead near Darlingford, Man. about 1880.

I have nothing concrete that verifies that Edward was born in Cheshire.

That's about all that I have :>)
