First of all I would say that I did try and get a copy of the book "Dictionary of medical Terms" as I was advised to last time I ask for a an explanation on archaic medical terms but it is out of print plus neither our libary or ebay have a copy!

I have googled this and looked at various old medical term websites but I can't get a definitive answer.

A death certificate I have states the cause of death as:-

"Ischial Abscess - 19 years" I understand Abscess and the duration but what is Ischial? The best I can come up with is that it is something to do with the Pelvis and Illium/Ischium.

Incidently, the person also had "Chronic nephritis" I know this is an inflamation of the kidneys.

thanks for any help!

The ischium is part of the pelvis.

There is a very graphic description of 'ischial abscess' at http://www.jbjs.org.uk/cgi/reprint/35-B/4/590.pdf It would appear to be connected with tuberculosis of the ischium.

Don't read it before you eat.......

Best wishes
