I am currently tracking down my fathers Grandfather, Edward Jackson, and I have followed him back through the census records to 1871, at which time he was 21, Boarding at a house in Cheetham Manchester as a Stonemason. This is as far as I can go, although his records consistently state that he was born in Huddersfield in 1850, I can find no trace in any census of this area prior to 1871. This is so frustrating because I need an earlier record to give me a clue as to his parents. If any of you more experienced researchers |bowdown| can advise my next move I would really appreciate it.

Peter Jackson.

P.S - But by heck I am enjoying it :D

There are several hits for an Edward JACKSON born Yorkshire who might be your chap, but it is difficult to identify yours specifically - from his marriage certificate, what was his dad's name and occupation (or does it record 'deceased')?

Hi,

Does he have an initial on any on the Census returns you have looked at?

Have you tried here for him?
http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/index.html

There are a few Edwards, and I've check ed the Census records for 61 in Yorkshire, and that returns too many to reduce the list.

Hi again,

is this chap married later to a Mary A?

If so, his birth is listed diffently on the 91 Census, unless I'm looking at the wrong entry.

Oxxxingham Yorks, can't quite make it out.

Using an online index to the 1851 census, I found an Edward Jackson born about 1850 in Ottringham, Yorks, but this is a long way from Huddersfield. Best get the father's name, as Geoffers says, since there are a few possibilities.

If I have the right man he was in North Meols (Southport area) in 1881 and married a lass (Mary H) from Huddersfield and had a one year old son, pob stated as Southport. There is nothing that fits the marriage on Lancsbmd so maybe they wed in Huddersfield.

Wow, Thank you all for your interest, uksearch has hit the right mark, that is my great, great grandfather. He married Mary Hannah Taylor, and I think it must have been a huddersfield wedding as that is where they were both from. I think I now have to find a wedding date and take it from there. Thank you all so much:)
Peter.
