Hi, I am new to this forum but not to genealogy. My mother got me into this and I've been working my paternal line off and on for nearly 10 years now

I have been looking for more information on my ancestor John HETHERINGTON who, according to his discharge papers from the Tyrone Militia in Ireland, was born about 1786 in Aghaloo Parish, Tyrone. He emigrated to Canada about 1823, with his wife Margaret .

I am looking for anything more I can get on him: His parents, siblings, birth certificate, marriage certificate, birth certificates for his children. Ultimately I would like to track the family back to England if I can.

His wife's maiden name was MCMORRAN according to a family letter written in 1930, but the same letter also says John HETHERINGTON was born in Manchester and "drifted to Ireland"-- which conflicts with the birthplace given in the discharge paper, so I am not certain of its reliability. The family letter also says Margaret MCMORRAN was the "daughter of Elizabeth MCKAY from Stewartstown, Ireland".

If I could find his marriage certificate from Tyrone (or wherever) or his children's birth certificates from Tyrone I reckon it might help me track down John HETHERINGTON's birth records, but I have come up dry. We even hired a researcher from Belfast a few years back and she could not find anything. I know the Irish records are incomplete. This is a brick wall for me. Maybe one day I'll have to visit Ireland and spend a few weeks visiting every Protestant church and cemetery in the area...
