View Full Version : Enlarging an old postcard

Hi.
I have just purchased an old postcard, about 1920,of my home town.
It shows 4 views. I was wondering if these views can be seperated and enlarged with out any damage to the postcard of course. Will a lot of the definition be lost and would I be breaking any copyright laws.
Anyone had a go at doing this and how did you do it?
Cheers Dave

My opinion. If it is for your own use, then copyright isn't an issue.

If you haven't got a really good scanner and photo software, one way would be to take it into a place where you can do copies of photographs.

Take as large a copy as the machine will allow. Then cut the new image into the four sections you want, and recopy them, if the resolution is good then you could end up with good and larger copies.

The end resolutions depend on how many pixels per inch there were to start with, very often really old photos and those taken on large glass plates can be enhanced with some great results.

Hope this helps

You won't be breaking any copyright laws for a postcard from 1920

Don't do anything to the postcard except to scan it. Once you have saved the digital image, you can play around with that to your heart's content.

If you don't have a scanner you might like to try experimenting with a digital camera. I've managed to photograph some old family portraits which were larger than A4 size with a 3.5 megapixel digital camera.

My Scanner (a Canon) has a toolbox facility which allows me to crop images. Alternatively use an image handling program to select each of the four images.

If you don't have one Irfanview is free to download.

Hi David,

if you have a scanner it's not to hard to do, but you need to scan on a high resolution. If you don't have one, ask a friend, they might be able to do it for you. Would be happy to write out some instructions on how too etc if you like? PM me if you need a Noddy guide.

A local Jessops, would probably do it for you, but charge the earth.

I'm just down the road in Gloucester, (if your location is Pershore) and would be happy to scan it for you.

That's the spirit, everyone helping everybody else. I'm an active member of two forums, this one for BMW LT's, and both have the same willingness to help, which is great to be part of.

Last year there were 34,000 bikers at the meeting in Garmisch Partenkirchen. When I was there in 2004 (1st Photo) there were only 20,000 ish. never seen so many bikes in one place. Fantastic event, and the road....Oh the roads.... Some fantastic riding in the Alps.
