I am sorry, I have already asked the following question in the wrong place. I am wondering if someone can help me? I have been told that there is a website where I can find a record of very old UK marriage licenses. I would like to find the marriage of my g.g.g. grandparents William and Elizabeth Stanbrough. I do not know Elizabeth's surname. Their children were baptized at All Saints Isleworth (the first 9 Jan. 1778) but I do not think that they were married at this church. The lady who gave me this information has unfortunately mislaid her record of this marriage but remembers it was by license. Betty Willson

Thanks very much Elley. I can hardly believe that you were able to come up with this information so easily. I've tried to find Elizabeth's surname for years. Please pardon my ignorance but what does N.B. stand for? Good luck and best wishes from a grateful friend, Betty Willson

Hi Elley
This Phillimores sounds amazing.
Please excuse me for butting into this thread but does the book show a marriage approx 1827 of Charles Warren from Earl Stonham to an Ann from Market Bosworth Leicestershire? This is the first time my tree has moved away from Suffolk and it would be prior to 1837! Annoying.|help|
Many thanks and again sorry if I have gate crashed this thread.I would just love to join this branch onto my tree!
Cheers
Marj.

Phillimore's marriage extracts are not recorded in a single volume. Those available are arranged by county. You can purchase copies via the Parish Chest (http://www.parishchest.com/)

Note that it is a transcript and as such contains the usual transcription errors so should only be used as a guide, it does not contan full entries as they appear in a marriage register.

Hi Betty,

You have caught me there! I have to admit that when I typed this entry out I also wondered what N.B. meant. In all the years that I have been following this hobby I have not found it on any of my family. It is not a Phillimore's abbreviation it is on the actual transcription.

I am sure that there are others on the boards that can help both of us on this on this query.........please?

Happy Hunting,

Elley

N.B. equals New Brentford. There are also references to Old Brentford and plain Brentford, so Betty might have to delve a little further as to precisely which church is meant.
Tip: Always read the opening pages of either the individual registers in this instance, or any CD. :)

Although it doesn't preclude a marriage being found in another parish from the home and/or baptismal parish of either the bride or groom, I think it is the exception rather than the rule that every year and every parish in a county is found in Phillimore's. e.g. I have a copy of the Huntingdonshire Phillimore's but it has the marriages for only 4 parishes when there are clearly more than 4 parishes in the county. That said, Phillimore's can be well worthwhile buying because many of the registers go back to circa the 1550s and they are therefore a very easy way of searching quite a lot of PRs. :) Even if the search is negative, it does mean you have a lot less PRs to search by other methods. And once you've searched some of the pre-1813 registers yourself, believe me, any and every little helps. :D

Thanks Pam for the information about N.B. Actually everyone on B-G Forums feels like a friend to me. Your replies are always helpful and interesting. Betty Willson
