I wasn't sure whether to put this into the Durham one or this one!

Thomas Scott Winter born in Southshields in 1850 is listed on the 1881 census as builder employed 17 men and 2 boys and on the 1901 census as house builder construction. Well as he is a reasonable sized employer I would have thought there would be some information on his business somewhere, but where is the best place to look, I have had a quick look on durham records on line, but nothing relating to builders came up any ideas?

Did he advertise in any directories or newspapers?

Well that's what I was hoping, but i havent found anything yet, but I am still looking!

Well I am very embarrassed as I have just discovered that although he was a builder, he was a builder in Surrey not Durham, I was looking at the place where he was born not where he was living at the time. So I will hide my head and start looking in Surrey!!!!!!!
