I have been tracing my family tree for about 2 years and have about 7,000 names going back to the early 1600's. Not all my work, I have been lucky to find links on various geneology sites. I do have a lot of gaps.

One of them is my Grand Father as follows;

Herbert George Hall b1919 Great Ellingham, Norfolk, England. Died 2 Dec 1969 in Wicklewood, Norfolk (I have death certificate). I have been unable to trace his birth certificate in the BDM register. I have his death and marriage details - this has hindered my search for his family as there are a lot of Hall's in Norfolk. I do know that his dad was called George Hall (so my mum says) and his Grand father was Herbert and he was a Shepherd.

If anyone can give me some advice as to how i can find this missing birth record or similar please let me know. Im pulling my hair out.

Many Thanks

Ang

Welcome bor - I help look after all the Norfolk dumplings! There are several forums just for us and they can be found here (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=107)

You say that you have his marriage details - do you actually have his marriage certificate? If not, you ned to obtain a copy.

People ofen get the day of birth correct, but make a mistake on the year and as has been pointed out on another recent thread, late registration is not unheard of.

Try the parish registers for Great Ellingham to see if he was baptised there - try looking for any Hebert George/george Herbert entries with any surname. Where have you got Great Ellingham from? There is an entry in the GRO index for Hebert G HALLS in Dec 1919 in Wayland (which includes Gt Ellingham). I see that from the GRO death index his birth date is given as 2 Oct 1969, so this looks quite a good match)

Did he have any siblings whose birth can be found? Their birth certificate should include the mother's maiden name, which will give some extra information to hunt.

Hi Ang
Welcome to the Forum. A couple of points which may help others to help you; you say you have his Marriage details, is that just a GRO reference, or do you have the Certificate? The Certificate should tell the name of his father. Does your Mum know the Christian name of George's wife? That may give a clue to their marriage, should be prior to Oct 1919. One other possibility is that he was not Registered as Herbert George.

Hi Ang
Great Ellingham comes under Wayland registration district. Have you searched around 1919 for a birth in this area? Your grandfather's marriage certificate will give his age & the name & occupation of his father. Your mother's recollection may not be accurate either to the date of birth or the name of the father. I suggest that first you get a copy of your grandfather's marriage certificate. If you post on the Norfolk board you will probably get lots of help from people who know the area.

Jeremy has beated me to it!

Hi Ang,

There is no marriage registered for George Hall to an 'Eaglen' (If he was born 1897 as given on 1901 census then he would marry after 1912 when spouse's name is given in index)
Though it seems remote but remember this was during WW1 there is a marriage in Yorkshire which is a possibility and should be looked into:-

George Hall & Elizabeth A Eagling reg Bridlington Yorks Jan/Mar 1915 vol 9d page 575

Purely speculation, but a hop, skip and a jump from Gt Ellingham is Besthorpe, where the world and his wife had the surname EAGLING/EAGLEN. I wonder if the lass was working as a nurse, or they met in Yorkshire and discoverd common Norfolk roots?

Hiya

Thank you for the information I will look your theory up re Eagling. I have ordered a copy of Herbert George Hall's marriage certificate. This will no doubt give me a thread and confirm parents.

Angela
