I believe this ancestor of mine came to Australia sometime between 1851 and 1861. Is there a place I can search for him. I know he was in Sydney and there is a record of a patent in this name in NSW in 1897. I have him on all the census in England up to 1861.
Help appreciated

Not a shipping record, sorry,
but it appears that he married in NSW in 1870 to Annie Robinson, at Balmain, New South Wales.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/familyHistory.htm
4 children registered Sydney up to 1875, including one who may have the same name as his father. So he may be the one in the hospital register.
Not all marriages in this time period record the parents names, however his birthplace, age and occupation may be recorded on the birth records as well. Three of the children have died in infancy. Edward Jr may have died 1941.
His death is not obvious, but you may recognize his parents forenames in the death index.
They were doing maintenance on the website yesterday, so the site is acting a little strange :)

Further to that, I found a burial in Rookwood cemetery (cd)
this is the NSW death register entry
14063/1903 KNOWLES EDWARD H TALBOT ROSANNA GRANVILLE
Talbot being his father's name, mother Rosanna, place Granville.
Does he sound like your chap?

Hi Christine
That's the one. Quite a lot of information for which I thank you. Is the Edinburgh in Australia?

I should have mentioned that EH Knowles Jr was at medical school in Edinburg so I really should assume that he was married and had a child there. I am hoping someone has the 1901 census for Scotland which should tell more. Maybe he never went back to Australia. Is the gravestone on a searchable site because I have another ancestor who was buried at Rookwood cemetery?

Hi Jen,
If you check the posting that you made for the Edinburgh census 1901, you will see that I found him living in Newcastle upon Tyne - well, he was there on census night! :)

On searching the birth and death index, there is a child born to a Samuel T Knowles and his wife Emily, they had a child called Ethel who was born 1901 and died 1905.
I would say that Nan is merely memorialized on the Headstone, as the inscription suggests, and died in Edinburgh.
Rookwood cemetery is gradually coming online -parts of it are already available, or were, I cannot find it at the moment. If you PM me I can look up the cd to see if there is a headstone inscription. Or do a new post.

Thanks Lenore. I had found them on a ship in 1905 and someone confirmed that it was my Knowles. Thanks for the arrival date.

Hi Jen,
A couple of bits of information for you (sorry if you already have this information):
Edward is listed in the Sands Directory(1892) as "Knowles, Edward H., chemist, 254 Sussex Street" AND as "Knowles, Edward H., Maud St, Granville".
I also found him in the 1883 directory as being at 228 Sussex St. In 1869, he was listed at 208 Sussex St.

No, I did not have this. Thank-you. I am eager to have any information on the family. EH Knowles Sr. died Dec. 27th 1903.( obituaries in newspaper?)Wife Annie died in 1921. As far as I know only one of his children survived, Edward Herrick Knowles Jr, who returned to Sydney after completing his medical degree in 1905. It is not easy searching for information in the 1900s unless you live in the town. Maybe you have access to later directories in which Jr might be listed as a Dr. I think he may have died in 1941.
Thanks
Jen
