I am trying to trace Frank Adey (son of Rev William Thomas Adey) born 1874, Leeds, Yorkshire, England. He is shown in the 1891 UK Census living with his parents in Ealing (near London) and then he disappears without a trace. Family tradition says that he went to West America but I have nothing to support this. I would be grateful if anyone with access to USA records could see if he does appear there.

Regards & thanks
John Adey

Hi John. Just a thought on this, are you looking at all variations of the surname in your searches. I have traced several English and French people who moved to the States, and the term "two countries divided by a common language" was never more apt.

If you are using a census search have you tried playing the * wildcard ?

For Chaboyer, we get Cheboyer - Chaboyea - Shaboyer - Sheboyer and plenty more.

I've had a look & I can't find a Fran* Adey or Adie, of the right approximate age, either in the censuses for the USA or Canada or in the passenger lists. Sorry.

John. How do you pronounce the name ?

I have an Ahier, pronounced Eye - err, which in some transcipts is spelt Ayore. Try finding that in a search :)

Heck knows how a West Coast enumerator would hear it.

Anyone know when census form were first completed by the family and handed to the enumerator. In the early ones, there were many who could not even write their own name.

Well I say the name as two letters A D, it is sometimes spelt Adie, Addie, Ady or Adye. As the son a well educated baptist minister who would probably have been able to read and write but just imagine he may have had a heavy Yorkshire accent and if a Western American tried to write what he thought was being said it could have ended up as almost anything.

Thank you for looking, I think this is going nowhere but at least it has given me a laugh.

Regards & thanks

Going nowhere John ? only after 15 years can one say it is going nowhere and even then it must be said without any certainty of being correct

I would never give up hope, it took me over 10 years to trake down a gg-uncle that emigrated to Canada. With one little clue from the OGS the search took off again & within a fortnight I was in contact with his grandson's wife.

The only shame is, his last surviving daughter only died 3 years ago.

It is only a few weeks ago that I came across a New York Times article that mentioned the schooner "Charmian" and its owner Atkinson... That led me to Cresswell in Northumberland, then to Southampton and then Southamton archives, which hold some papers refering to the schooner and mention my grandfather, who went by a different first name and date of birth. From there I went back to the Greenwich maritime museum and the name of another ship where he listed as an able bodied seaman...

So for 15+ years no movement and then leaps and bounds because of an NYT entry of 1896.

That is why many of us never ever give up.

Hi I am a Francis (Frank) Pinney Adey, I live in Umberleigh, Devon, England
The past three (at least) generations of my family have been called The same name (usually I think Frank) ...my father was a theatre stage manager, my mother a dancer on the London palladium. His father was a well known Empresario, who ran shows at Clacton theatre and introduced such stars as Toni handcock, Roy Hud and many others.
I did beleive there was an American decendant, but never traced that.
My father always had a great sympathy with the States, and indeed helped bring Baseball over here, he was at one time the only official US recognised umpire in England, and played in Holland in the all stars, and many US English based service teams teams.
Now I don't know if any of this relates to your search, but you may find it interesting.

Thank you Frank

This is interesting and maybe there is a connection.

Do you have approximate dates and places of birth and/or death for any of your last three generations?

Regards & thanks

Hi I was born 1946, my father is still alive and is 86, his father died about 25 years ago, and as I mentioned was part of a long line of theatrical connections.
Don't know if that helps...I don't know about the generation before that.
