Are you sure about the birtplace & birthdate?

There is only one John Jones born Chester in Devon. He was born in 1856 & is aboard a vessel.

There is however this family which seems to match your family in other respects.

John Jones Head M 57 Greenwich Pensioner Fulford, Cheshire
Elizabeth Jones Wife M 48 Devon Devonport
John Jones Son U 19 Seaman Devon Devonport
Emma M Jones Dau 13 Scholar Kent Lloyd
Thomas H Jones Son 11 Lancash, Freckleton
William C Jones Son 6 Lancash Leytham
14 John Street, Devonport, Devon
RG10/2130 ED 2 Folio 59 Page 62 Sched 381

If so here is the family in 1881

Elizabeth Jones Head W 57 Nurse Devon Devonport
Edwin Jones Son U 24 R Naval Seaman Devon Devonport
Emma Mary Jones Dau U 23 Sussex Rye
William Charles Jones Son U 16 Cabin Boy RN Lancashire Lytham
Exeter Street, Plymouth Charles, Devon
RG11/2192 ED 10 Folio 22 Page 38

That narrows down your search a little. The chances are it took place in Stoke Damerel or Plymouth between 1871 & 1881

Hi Christine

Welcome to BG forums! |wave| I've just noticed that you have added your whole address to your public profile. I don't want to put you off, but, whilst members of the forum are perfectly genuine, what you post on here is not a secure site and can be accessed by all sorts of search engines.

Everyone on here is extremely friendly and helpful and it is easy to forget that what we say is open to a wider audience. So, with that in mind you might want to change your profile to something a little less complete! ;)
