I am looking for my gggrandfather, Richard Fowler Sr, born abt 1818 in Philleigh and lived St. Agnes. He married Elizabeth Williams of Manaccan and had children: Thomas H.W., Mary Ann, Fanny, Charles Edward Uden, Richard, Ellen, and Albert. I am descended through Richard. Richard Jr. immigrated to USA with wife, Susan Jane Bennett(s) about 1886.

Any information about parents of Richard Sr. or Elizabeth would be amazing. I have hit a brick wall on this side as my grandmother (married Richard Jr.'s son) was from Finland and I cannot find records.

Thanking you in advance,

Karen

There are other Fowler's baptized in Philleigh during that period, children of Thomas & Elizabeth, but no Richard I'm afraid.

When did he marry? If the marriage was after 1837 the certificate will give his father's name.

Are you certain about Elizabeth's surname?

There is a marriage on 30-Jan 1843 in Manaccan between Richard FOWLER, of full age (ie over 21) husbandman, of Philleigh, son of Thomas & the bride is Elizabeth SAUNDERS aged 18 of Helford, no father given for Elizabeth. (Transcribed by Diane Donohue)

There is the possibility that, as there is no father given, Elizabeth Williams & Saunders are one & same.

In case you don't already have these, the baptisms of three of the children of Richard & Elizabeth took place at Philleigh

I thank you all so much for the information. Some of it I had, and some I did not. To answer some specifics:

I am not certain when Richard & Eliz. married; I have looked through the BMD and have not found them, so I assumed it was prior to 1837. I have been unable to find Richard in the 1841 census in either Cornwall or Devon.

Suedent states that Elizabeth Saunders could well be Eliz. Williams--how so? Were naming practices different then as they were in Finland? Just wanting to understand. I assumed she was "Williams" because of sister Grace; I had found Grace in a census.

I had been thinking that Richard Sr. was son of Thomas, making Druscilla a sister, but was unable to make a sourced connection--it was just a hunch.

I also assume that Richard, Sr. would have named a son after his own father, and since his first-born son was Thomas, it makes sense.

I do know that Richard Jr. and wife, Susan Jane Bennett(s) immigrated to Michigan, USA, in 1886 and had several children. Her mother was Elizabeth SAUNDERS. Connection?? Her father was James Bennett(s).

As to Thomas "Fuller" living with/near the Greets, could Rebecca Greet be a daughter?

A lot of assumptions on my part, but isn't that how we find the facts?

Why I said that your Elizabeth Williams & the Elizabeth Saunders of the marriage could be the same person, is that it can be dangerous to assume that just because Elizabeth's sister was a Williams that she was too.

They may have been half-sisters, it was rare for a census enumerator to make the distinction between full & half sisters.

The only way to be certain of Elizabeth's maiden name would be to get birth certificates for the children.

Even then it's not cut and dried. I have a case of a lady with seven children giving one maiden name on 6 certificates and a different maiden name on one. With a bit of detective work it transpired that on 6 certificates she had given the surname of her first husband & on the seventh she gave her true maiden name!

As far as relationships/households go in the 1841 census go things can be tricky. Sometimes enumerators differentiated between 2 households living in the one property, at other times they lump everyone together.

Rebecca Greet may well be a married daughter of Thomas Fowler but personally I would do some serious digging rather than just assuming that she was.

Again, I thank you so much for your insight and information. I only "assume" things until I find a source to prove facts out. I got caught in that trap when I first started out in genealogy and found myself with not only egg on my face, but the entire omelet!

I shall dig further--you have given me so many avenues to follow. Thank you again!

Have you looked at the Genuki page for St Agnes?

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/StAgnes/index.html

There is a wealth of information available & much of it can be purchased from Parish Chest.
