Samuel was illegitimate son of Mary Ann Matley.

Was Matley Mary’s married or unmarried name?
Was Robert Matley the step father?
Why can I find a census form with Samuel Matley Between his birth and marriage?

I have speculated with various Robert and Mary Ann matleys building theoretical trees. I have even considered a ? Rothwell as a potential father as this is the middle name of Samuels’s first son "Harry Rothwell Matley" c1881. This surname does not appear anywhere else apart from Andrew Solomon Rothwell who was witness to Samuels Wedding. Could his family be the key? I’ve looked and found a Samuel Rothwell who is Andrews Brother.

Hello and Welcome.

Please don't let my reply put you off. The information on certificates is not always accurate. In the case of the marriage certificate I would take the information about the groom's father with a rather large pinch of sodium chloride;).

Hello James,

You maybe could try looking in the Parish Records that cover the area in which he was born. It may give a clue to his father: I have a number of baptisms where it says "and (name) is father of said child, by oath sworn by (mother) this day.... "

Good luck,

Jan

If he was baptised in Dukinfield in the CofE two likely churches are St John the Evangelist and St Marks.
