At Sea on HMS Ganges in 1861

My GGG grandfather Alfons Eder appears on the 1861 census on board HMS Ganges as a Bandsman, The on line censuses do not show where the Ganges was on the night of the census. Is there anyway of finding this information ?

Paul Benyon's web-site (http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/18-1900/Index.html)has a very large index of Ships and what they were doing at various points in time. Some ships are better covered than others, but worth a look anyway

The Parish Chest (http://www.parishchest.com/)may have a CD for sale of the Navy List for this time showing its station

Using search engine brings up an entry on wikipedia saying it was on the Pacific Station 1857-61

The HMS Ganges museum (http://www.hmsgangesmuseum.org.uk/) deals specifically with the shore base, but may carry some information on floating ships that bore the same name.

The position of the Ganges on the night of the 1861 Census can be found at RG9/4439 Folio 204 (there is no page number) This page is two pages back from Folio 205 page 1.

Unfortunately the position is given as latitude and longitude so you would have to work it out!

Thanks for that info Ann. Unfortunately I do not have the Navy Cd and this page will not come up on fmp nor anc. If you would not mind telling me the coordinates you have seen then as you say I can work it out (hopefully I still know my latitude from my longtitude)

Somewhere at sea !! mid Atlantic.

The Ganges was the Flagship of the Pacific Squadron, and had been based at Vancouver. So presumably from its position it was on its way back to Britain.
