Hi All,

I'm new to this by a matter of days so please bear with me. On the 1901 census form, in the final column (deaf, dumb etc.), is the abbreviation UX.
I understand that it is short for the Latin uxor=wife but why is it there when she's already described as 'wife' in a previous column?
Is it the husbands second wife or the wife's second husband maybe?
HELP! I'm struggling already! Thanks.

Hi Drew and welcome |wave|

Do you have a few clues - census reference or name, place of birth, age etc so that we may look up the page and have a ponder?

Thanks,

Jan

Hi Jan,

Good to have someone who knows what they're doing on my side.
The UX is in relation to:
ELIZABETH S POWELL (AGE 42) wife of JAMES H POWELL (AGE 40)
159 PURVES ROAD
WILLESDEN MIDDLESEX
PAGE 39
1901 CENSUS

However, it can't be anything to do 'wife' because further on in the census for PURVES ROAD the same abbreviation is used for a young girl. Maybe I'm misreading it?

E D STONEMAN (AGE 9) daughter of A S STONEMAN (HEAD)
173 PURVES ROAD
WILLESDEN MIDDLESEX
PAGE 42
1901 CENSUS

Hope that's enough info for you to go on. Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated.

This is not "Ux", it's "Mx" ie Middlesex, correcting an entry showing the incorrect county. Note that in one case the correction is wrong!.

Pleae note that if you have a census reference, it helps to provide the full standard reference.

Well done, Peter - you got there before me!

Yes, as Elizabeth is recorded as being born in Cheshunt, Essex, the Essex is crossed through and Mx for Middlesex written in. The fact that Cheshunt is in Hertfordshire is neither here nor there...:)

The Stoneman girl suffers a similar fate - Wood Green is recorded initially as London, this is crossed through and Mx inserted.

Glad we could be of help. :D

Ah ha! I hoped someone would know where Cheshunt really is! :D

Hi Again,

Thanks to all, you've been a great help. I had no surname to work on but I did try to trace an Elizabeth S ??????? back to Cheshunt, born c. 1859, and discovered that over the years Cheshunt has been part of Essex, Middlesex and Hertfordshire.
Although I'm "new" I do realise this is due to county boundaries being moved and not the village/town. When Elizabeth S ?????? was born in Cheshunt it may well have been part of Essex or Middlesex.

Cheers,

Drew

Hi Drew

Done some digging around if you notice there is a niece Minnie Barefoot, traced her back to 1871 with her parents George Barefoot and Mary A, found a marriage and it has Mary Ann Joyner, but I also found a marriage for

James Henry Powell to a possible Elizabeth Sarah Toyner 1883 June qtr Kensington vol 1a page 249

Which one is wrong I don't know but my g grandfather surname of Simpkins was listed under Timpkins in the marriages. I couldn't find an Elizabeth Toyner on the census, Toye yes.

Just found them in 1861 Elizabeth S was 6 Mary A 12 under Joyner living in Enfield Middx Elizabeth was born Cheshunt Herts. But please check this out first, get a birth certificate to make sure.

1871
Thomas Joyner 38 Oxford
Sarah A(?) 25 can't read Berks
Emily 14 St Pan, Middx
Mary A 12 St Pan.
William T 7 St Pan
Elizabeth S 5 Cheshunt Herts
Francis C 3 son Enfield Middx
Richard J 1 Enfield

Looks like it could be Thomas Joyner's 2nd marriage.
could be marriage 1853 Sarah Ann Cottrell?

Good Luck

Irene
