Can anyone advise me about the Kilmainham Hospital in Dublin regarding Chelsea Pensioners. My GG Grandfather John Wood a Scot born c1807 was a Chelsea Pensioner from the 1860's until his death in June 1894. For most of the time he collected his pension in Glasgow or Aberdeen and was still in Glasgow in 1881 according to the census . Then in 1882 his pension was paid at Kilmainham. Was Kilmainham for hostel type care for the poor or a medical place or even a retreat for the senile? Why would someone go from Glasgow to Dublin to a Chelsea pensioner hospital? His wife Bridget(aka Margaret) and daughter Margaret remained in Glasgow. He died 1894 according to pension record but it does not say where. I believe Irish records may have been lost in fires during the uprising against the British rule or would 1894 death records survive? Lots of questions . Can anyone help with the Irish background to Chelsea pensioners?
Thanks
