can any one help me find out why my relative was in pentonville prison 1871 [as per census]would like to know what crime he commited.Many thanks Gerda [Australia]

I see that you're in Australia so this job would presumably have to be done by someone on your behalf...
Tha National Archives has the prison registers and calendars for Pentonville HO 24/16-19 and PCOM 2/61-83. The latter includes prisoners' photographs.

And don't forget that 626 prisoner's photos from the PCOM2 class are included on documentsonline (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results.asp?catid=13&searchType=browsable&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1&first_date=18700101&last_date=18791231) Not an awful lot of piccies, but it's got to be worth a browse over a cuppa, just in case - thinking about it, these photos may be indexed on TNA's catalogue (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp) - try searching on just teh surname in the word or phrase field and in the department or series code enter PCOM
