I'm researching Gape in Dorset. Walter John Gape born in Bridport 1867ish m. Mary Smeeth in Amesbury, Wilts in 1891, daughter Eveline Mary Gape b. 1892 in Amesbury m. Joseph Albert Harding. Walter was in the army Dorset Regt.(per 1891 census). Can't find a record of him or his family in the 1901 census. Anyone out there know anything about this family?

Hi there! I'm researching GAPE in Puddletown! My grandmother's grandfather was Zabulon (or Sablin, or any of the other variations...) GAPE baptised Puddletown 21 August 1831.

I have a Sarah Gape bc1826 Puddletown who married Eli Riggs of Cheselborne in 1850.

I have a Sarah Gape bc1826 Puddletown who married Eli Riggs of Cheselborne in 1850.

There was a Sarah Jane Gape baptised 2 September 1827 at Puddletown. Sarah was one of Zabulon Gape's elder sisters. So far my research has discovered that the family was as follows:

Andrew (father)
Elizabeth (mother)
Jane - born c1818
William Issac - bap. 1 Feb 1819
John - bap. 9 Mar 1821
Elizabeth - bap. 1 June 1823 (M. 4th qtr of 1859, Dorchester, 5a 780)
Mary - born c1827
Sarah Jane - bap. 2 Sept 1827
Zabulon - bap. 21 Aug 1831 (M. Amelia Smith, 3rd qtr 1854, Dorchester, 5a 621)

According to the parish records, Zabulon was actually baptised as 'Sablin'. He then appears on various census returns as Yabulon, Zebulon and Zabulon. On his son's marriage certificate he was named as 'Septimus' and his gravestone (in the churchyard at Puddletown) is inscribed 'Zabulon'!! Zabulon had six children that I know of, one being John Gape. John married and had a daughter Doris, who was my Father's mother. Perhaps we are connected then, boddso?

I must just say that Jenny Gape, who has posted earlier on this thread, has done a lot of research on the Gape family and I am indebted to her and her husband Geoff for all their help and advice in my novice meanderings!
