View Full Version : New Year Competitions for Newbies (and not so newbies)
Sue Mackay
01-01-2008, 04:46 PM
This is a competition which is open to all, though it is aimed chiefly at those who are fairly new to British-Genealogy and therefore may not know their way around the forum or how to locate the wealth of information stored on the site.
All entries should be sent to me via PM (private message) – click on my name next to my picture above and then choose ‘Send a Private Message’ to Sue Mackay from the menu. Do NOT post the answers by replying to this thread. The closing date is 14 January.
The winner will be the one with the highest score. If more than one person scores 100% (and hopefully that will be everyone) then there will be some form of ballot. The prize will be a CD of ‘Evidence on the Employment of Children – 1842’, produced by Archive CD Books. Should Bo Peep get spare tickets to the ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ event in London then these will also be issued to competition entrants by ballot.
ALL the answers can be found by searching this site. In the first instance try the Search button located in the blue Tool Bar across the top. Type in the word(s) or phrase you are looking for, and it will bring up threads containing that word or phrase. The answer may not be in the first posting on the thread, but as you scroll through the posts the search item will be highlighted in red.
If you have a feeling that the answer will be on a particular forum, try Forum Jump. Scroll right to the foot of the page and this menu will appear, enabling you to locate other forums (and scroll quickly through to see what is available) without having to return to the home page.
Some of the answers are contained in the Resources Pages, which are essential reading for newbies. If you have the Forum set as your start page then you reach the Resources Pages by going to http://www.british-genealogy.com/ and clicking on the various sources.
The questions are in the next posting of this thread. If you wish to print them off to have on your desk while you search for the answers, click on Thread Tools at the top of this message and select ‘Show Printable Version’.
Good luck!

It might get you a prize at this rate Eileen. No entries so far! Come on folks, your New Year hangover should be over by now...
The competition is open to EVERYONE, and you have till January 14 to find the answers. If you can't find them all, put in an entry with what you can find - it might still qualify for a prize. Questions are further up on this thread.

That's cos the questions are hard! and require us to actually go look up the answers. Most of us are too full of Christmas fare and too lazy to do that.

I bet you could answer some of them without looking up a thing :D And they are all designed to be found very easily by using the Search button at the top of the page, which many seem to be totally unaware of!
I have hopes that some people have been having a root around via the search button, as there have been a number of contributions to very old threads appearing in New Posts (You didn't look at the date on Rod's posting re Registration Cards, did you Christine ;) )

Just in case you wanted some information about the main prize, see below. It costs £19.95 to buy, so it is certainly worth winning.
Evidence on the Employment of Children - 1842 (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=listlinkeditems&cat=D3270&supplier=&breadcrumb=Other+Resources%3AOccupations:Archive+C D+Books)
This huge volume of 1842, reproduced as a facsimile copy on CD, is a government publication containing evidence on the employment of children. Evidence is stated by means of interviews with the employers, adult workers and children, relating to the work and life style conditions of the children. Almost 900 pages of testimonies and interviews, covering various types of factories and work in a wide variety of places in Britain.
An amazing and fascinating insight into conditions of work and peoples' lifestyle in 1842 in their own words. Did your ancestor work in a factory? Put meat on the bare bones of your family history by understanding how they lived and worked.

There is one week left to get your entries in. I've had a few all correct entries, so a ballot will be necessary, but not so many that you won't have a good chance if you send yours in.
Nearly everyone who has entered has commented that they enjoyed doing the quiz and learned a few things they didn't know.

I already have the CD and will be going to WDYTYA helping out on a stall, so I'm not interested in the prizes, but I am going to enter the competition. Sue has put a lot of effort into the competition, and everyone should send in their entries as a way of supporting her and saying 'thank you'.
'Older' (as in length of membership :)) members like myself may know most of the general answers and how to search for the specific 'who killed who' ones, but it's a brilliant way of introducing newer members to a lot of information and 'how to'.
And thank you Sue, I now know three very interesting details that I didn't know last week. :D

Though I bet you've got Sue worried if she's only got one answer for question 2. :D I know there's one that's obvious (to me!), but must admit that at the back of my mind there's a little bell warning me that there is another one.
(A few minutes later - think I've remembered two of the words, but can't find a third that fits. )
The main thing to remember is that all the answers are contained in either the forum or the Brit-Gen link Sue gave in her first post. If you've found two, give both answers and quote the links. If you've just googled and got 'professional car cleaning' then I think you may assume that that answer is not correct.:D

Try the Acronyms and Abbreviations Forum. I have now 'stuck' Bo Peep's list so that it appears at the top.

Several names had to go into the hat. My hat is too floppy for the purpose and the only other 'person' in the house at the moment able to ensure impartiality is Taz.

And the winner is.....
margarita from Greece. Congatulations Maggie. Please PM Bo Peep with your postal address so that she can send you your prize.
Bo Peep doesn't know for sure yet how many tickets to WDYTYA she will get but thinks it is likely to be at least five. Taz has decided that the following qualify for tickets, in this order, if available :

Sue,
Thank you very much for the competition and to Taz for picking my winning entry - I don't think I've ever been picked as a dog's dinner before!! (I may have looked like one occasionally but that's another story.)
I must confess that before the competiton I had not looked around the site very much - I just got hooked on the Forum - and I was amazed at how much useful information is there on the resource pages. So, Sue, you have succeeded in your aim in at least one instance.
I look forward to receiving the prize.
Big hug to Taz.
Maggie
(Takes bow, sobs into hankie and thanks everyone from parents down to tea lady.)

Bo Peep, You know that the tickets have to pass through the infra-red machine at the door to prove they're valid ;););) - well surely it should be relatively easy for you to 'invalidate' Jan's ticket before you send it out to her? How about you setting one for fun (no prizes) about Australia and genealogy over there Christine? You needn't restrict your answers like Sue did - you can include google - as long as all the answers can be found on the web. And like Sue, you can always give some useful websites, e.g.
http://www.australiagenweb.org/
About 10 -15 questions (depending on your stamina :D:D ). e.g. How much will a birth certificate cost you in Victoria? What is the Ryerson Index? After whom is Banksia named? I have no (known) Aussie rellies but I always find it interesting learning about the types of records held in other countries. And Aussie newbies to the forum may learn something too.

Well of course the good thing about those 'slurp spiders' that you will see if you look at 'Who's On Line?' is that most things on the Forum do turn up on Google, and a lot of people have been brought to the Forum as a result. However, don't forget the Search button on this site - saves a bit of window hopping!
