I'm tracing the family of George Malins, a cooper from Charlbury. George died in September, 1875. I've traced his children, except for John (I think he died in 1857), and William, born Charlbury, 10th November, 1848. I'm trying to discover if this William is our ancestor who was married in Dublin, Ireland, in 1875. He gave his father's name and occupation as George Malins, a cooper. William from Charlbury doesn't appear in the 1871 Census for England, but appears in Wandsworth Prison in 1881. I've had the prison records checked, but no record of him could be found - apparently there are gaps in the records. Job Carpenter, born in Charlbury (C1855), also appears in Wandsworth Prison in 1881. I've found him in 1871, 1891 and 1901, but this hasn't helped me find William. William's elder brother, George Harris Malins became a Baptist minister and was the pastor of the church in Dublin, in which our William was married, from 1864 to 1869. After moving around England, until 1888, George went to Canada and then to the USA. He died in New York in 1893. I've found several William Malins in Canada and the USA, but none of them match particularly well. I've traced George Malins' two daughters, but they haven't led me to William. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The National Archives (TNA) at Kew has several research guides include this one for convicts and prisoners (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletID=253)There seem to be three possible sources that might give something useful:

HO27 - Criminal Registers England and Wales 1805-92

HO104 - Calendars of Prisoners 1868-1971

MEPO6 - Habitual Criminal Registers and Miscellaneous Papers 1834-1959

Though accessing the records from Australia has its obvious problems

Victorian Prisoners Photgraph (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results.asp?CatID=13&searchType=browsable&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1) Albums are available on documentsonline - possibly worth having a couple of cuppas whilst you browse them?

Some institutions (Asylums, sometimes workhuses, prions) in census returns only record inmates by initials - so if he was a bad lad in 1871 as well, he may be difficult to identify.

Died George, who popped his clogs in 1875, leave a will in which he mentions his surviving children and their addresses?

Thanks for the information about burials for Malins in Charlbury, and also for the information about George, the plumber and glazier. From what I've researched, he would probably be a relative of Charlbury George. I gather from my research that lots of Malins in the Chipping Norton area were related.

Thank you for your suggestions. I'll check my records and see which of those records, if any, were searched for me. I think my researcher went to the London Metropolitan Archives and I arranged a search at the Surrey History Centre. Someone also suggested searching newspapers for the Wandsworth area, around the time William would have been tried and imprisoned. I've compiled a list of papers, but have been slow off the mark!

I haven't found a will for George either, because I've relied on internet resources, so I'll ask my researcher to check that for me too.

At present I'm waiting (with fingers crossed), for a reply from the Baptist archives in Ireland.

Thanks so much, hopefully something positive might come of all this! Leonie.

I have been researching Malins as Marianne Harris Malins 1848-1939 married James Robert Pearman 1838-1904, in 1867. One of their many children Alice Malins Pearman b.1885 was the second wife of my gt grandfather Frederick Edward Knight 1855-1935 in 1911. He was 56 and she 26, the same age as his eldest daughter. A serious family rift occurred! Get back to me if you want more details. I would be delighted to learn more of Alice.

Hi Ian! How exciting. I have a huge amount on the Charlbury Malins and their children. My husband's ancestor is William Malins. After years of researching, the Malins from Charlbury, is the only Malins family I've found, with a William who was the right sort of age and who had a father George, who was a cooper (stated on William's marriage certificate). A son of the Malins from Charlbury was a Baptist minister from 1864-1869, in Dublin. Marianne's eldest son, Arthur, was adopted by George, the Baptist minister and went to Canada and the USA with him. He married in Connecticut and died there, without having any children, C1918. My quest is to make the connection which will verify that William from Charlbury is in fact the same William who married in Dublin. William from Charlbury was in Wandsworth prison in 1881. His records are missing from the prison registers, but on a visit to Wandsworth Heritage Services earlier this year, I searched one of the local papers and found that he had robbed his sister (Sarah) and brother-in-law (Arthur Collis), with whom he was living. This occurred less than a week before Sarah gave birth to her first baby. William gave himself up after about a week and was given the mandatory sentence of six months. I'm sure there would have been a rift there too! I would love to learn what you know and I have loads more information to email to you. leonie AT fishinternet DOT com DOT au
