Loulou what was maria's husbands name? it may that he was away from home that night, or residing elsewhere, the services perhaps.

Hello Louloul

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know if this will help you, but I've found the family in 1871. You may, of course, have this info already, but if not.....

It is possible that he worked shifts and was at his place of emplyment on the night of the census - if a form was not left with the the company where he was working, he would appear to be missing on the night of the census.

Also, do remember that some institutions (e..g asylums) just record inmates by initials, age and place of birth.

This looks like George's birth
Births Mar 1868 Taft George Aston 6d 263

and Minnie
Births Jul 1871 Minnie Taft Aston 6d 237

Their certificates will gives Maria's maiden name but I wouldn't be at all surprised if this was Maria's marriage.

Marriages Jun 1866 TAFT William/COOPER Maria Birmingham 6d 173

William isn't around in 1891 either:
George Taft Head S 23 Gun Barrel Filer Warwickshire Birmingham
Minnie Taft Sister S 19 Porter in Warehouse Warwickshire Birmingham
Ashley Street Court 8, Birmingham, Warwickshire

Hi Louloul

The references given will help you find the exact page on the censuses - saves a lot of time.

Each census year has a different reference:

1841/1851 HO107
1861 RG9
1871 RG10
1881 RG11
1891 RG12
1901 RG13

There is then another number for the place.
The folio number is stamped on the righthand page of the book when open.
Page number is self-explanatory!
From 1851 each household is given a schedule number, so helps to see who was living with whom.
1841 was the first census giving names, but no relationships are given and no place of birth (only whether they were born in the same county). Ages were rounded down over the age of 15 (though sometimes you are lucky and the enumerator has given the exact age)

Censuses are available on various pay-per-view websites.

You will find the reference printed on a separate strip next to the image.
