census look-up please

Hi,
I have this family on the 1861 census;
John Cox age 50 widower b. Potton, Beds
John (son) age 25 b. Potton
Mary (daughter-in-law) age 23 b. Sutton
Living in King Street, Potton.
I'd like to know the name of John's wife, so if someone can go back and check the earlier census I'd be very grateful.

In 1851 John was already a widower:

Mary Ginn, Wife, 65, b Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire
John Cox, Lodger, Widower, 40, Ag Lab, b Potton
Susan Cox, dau, 11 b Potton

There are a few likely candidates in 1841, but none living in Potton. Do you have the names of any other children?

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your help. I've had a look through my notes and found a Susan Cox chr.20/09/1840 daughter of John and Hannah. One of the possible marriages for John is on 19/05/1834 to Hannah Green so I think it's likely that Hannah is who I'm looking for. I'm off to check death dates now I've got a name.

You may well find that John's wife died in childbirth with Susan so check the Parish Records for Potton, if you can.

You may also find that Elizabeth Webb coould be John's sister. Many families looked after their own when a mother died.
