Hello everyone. I've only been researching my tree for a short time but find it all-consuming. I'm recently retired from education (Hooray!) and have moved from Essex to Exmouth in Devon which is wonderful. I have a young cocker spaniel who loves long walks on the beach.

I've discovered that many of my ancestors lived in HUNDON or STOKE BY CLARE in Suffolk or ASHEN over the border in Essex. I'd love to know more about life for agricultural labourers on the land in those places from 1700's to 1900's. Many moved to Stratford East London to work on the railway so I'd like to learn more of that history.

The surnames that interest me at the moment are CUDBY, CLARK(E), MURTON, and ROGERS

Happy New Year to everyone, and best wishes
Jackie

Hello Jackie and welcome to the site |wave|

If you go to the page about labourers (under occupations) you will find a number of references to farm labourers, including "The Empty Fields - the Agricultural Strike of 1914" by Roy Brazier. Published by Ian henry Publications Ltd, this is available from the Parish Chest and is full of information about their lives.

There was a book published in 1928 - 'A History of Clare, Suffolk' which you might find in a good second hand bookseller, or a reference library

A bit to the north, in Norfolk, but there is an excellent book -

'Unquiet Country, Voices of the Rural Poor 1820-1880' by Robert Lee
