Hi
Is it possible to find a divorce between 1937 & 1955?
Where would I look?
Vast range of time but I know that one of the parties remarried c 1955. I believe that the other person remarried too,but no idea when.
One of them changed their name also.
Would thay have been divorced in the name in which they married?
Is it possible that one of the parties could have been registered as dead or missing and how long would that have been?
Would that be a separate search?
Would really appreciate any help.
Both parties are dead.

This link (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=53) is the TNA research guide on divorce.
Few records survive at TNA post-1937 - you might try the entry books, basically an index in document class J78, which would at least give evidence of the case having been heard.
Other sources might be reports in local newspapers and second marriages (marital status).
If records survive, they should show the married name.
If one party was registered as dead, the survivor would not need to go through a divorce.
Have you lost someone?

You'll have to contact the Decree Absolute Section of the Principal Registry of the Family Division.

Hi
I discovered a few years ago that I had a close relative who I didn't know about. By this time they were in their late 80s early 90s.They caused a bit of a scandal way back and were not referred to after that.
I learnt that the person concerned 'disappeared', but that they changed their name & remarried, don't know where or when. Their spouse did divorce them & remarried.
I am rather vague as there are people alive who may be upset by names being mentioned.
Probably a wild goose chase, and impossible for anyone to help since I offer so little information. I was hoping that I may be able to pursue this quietly!!!
Any suggestions as to how I might proceed.
Thanks for your responses.

Hi
...They caused a bit of a scandal way back and were not referred to after that...
If there was a scandal the case might feature in the press; have you tried the Times, you can do a full text search on that, similarly the (Manchester) Guardian, if that's more appropriate? They are both on line now; many county libraries seem to give free access to the former, the latter is available on subscription.

hi Colin
Will try the local paper when I'm back home on a visit !
I doubt it would have made the national press.
The scandal was more of a domestic nature!
Though I believe there may have also been a prison sentence at some point.
All very vague as I only have scraps of info with no real time concept.
I guess a warrant for an arrest would die with the person.
Is there any way of finding this out?
Cheers again
