Hi, I'm kind of a "dunce" when it somes to military lingo........ I know what KIA means but what does DOW mean??

With abbreviations, it is best to provide a bit more context, as one abbreviation can stand for several things.

DOW is definitely an abbreviation for "Died of Wounds", but it also can mean "Duration of War". Since you also mentioned KIA in the same sentence (Killed in Action), then Died of Wounds is by far the most likely candidate, but to be sure you'd need to tell us where you found it, and an example of it being used would also be helpful.
