Hi,

Can anyone look this marriage up for me please, between Thomas Hunt and Augusta Clinch, on 29th April 1835. I was hoping that both partners Father's names would be on the certificate? For Thomas, I have his father as Thomas, and Augusta, her father as Thomas? I am not sure what infomation is included on certificates prior to civil registration. If there are any names of witnesses, could you make a note of them for me.

If the couple's fathers are not on the certificates, how do I go about finding this information? Thanks,

Carol

CarolSorry, can't do the lookup for you, but....

The form of marriage entry 1754-1836 differs from that used from 1837 onwards. Prior to 1837, marriage entries include:

Groom + Bride - Name, of what parish, whether single or widowed
(note that some registers do not record marital state)

Whether married by banns or licence and date.

If bride/groom were minors then the person giving consent is noted.

Groom + Bride's signature or mark
Witnesses signature or mark

So, fathers' names are not necessarily included unless it was the marriage of a minor, or if they were a witness to the marriage.

To find out the parents' names, search for the couple in the 1851 census so that you can hopefully find a birthplace (if the birthplace is a large town/city, keep your figners crossed that a parish name is mentioned) and then browse the parish registers for that place. If the couple married by licence, then you may also try to hunt out the marriage licence bond as the bondsman was often a parent.
