My ancestor Thomas Osgood from Newbury Berk's served with the Grenadier Guards in the Crimea. My research so far has been unable to establish anything about his service other than an entry on his attestation paper which states he joined the Grenadier guards on the 5 Oct 1852, that he served with the army in the east between Nov 1854 and July 1856 or 58 (The writing is not very clear) and that he was discharged on the 4 Oct 1862.

I am seeking advice on where to look for further details ie medal rolls battalion etc.
I intend to visit the guards museum but as time will be limited want to go in prepared and knowing what I am looking for, if that makes sense.

Try TNA archives. If you have Regt # should be fairly easy to find. I would also try Osgoode. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp?j=1

I think that someone on the forums has access to information regarding the Crimea, so you may be lucky to get specific help.

I'm afraid that I cannot do that much. However, The National Archives (TNA) who hold some records which will be of use, have loads of resarch guides, these can be found here (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1) - scroll down to B and look at the links prefixed 'British Army'. Particularly look at those dealing with pensions, musters, discharge papers and also 'useful sources for tracing soldiers'.

From memory, some information will be held by The Guards, some by TNA.

1366 Pte Thomas Osgood, 3rd Btn Gren Guards according to the roll.
He was entitled to a single clasp for Sebastopol it appears.

The battalion returned to England in 1856 and were still there in 1862 when Thomas was discharged. They were the only battalion of the Gren Guards in the Crimea.
