The 1861 Census for Withycombe Raleigh, Devon shows:
William Selway Head age 57
Sarah Selway Wife 54
Frederick Selway Grandson 1

Frederick is still living with his grandparents in the 1871 Census (again no mention of parents in the household).

I'm trying to trace the parents of Frederick. Can anyone help? I can't find a matching Frederick Selway birth entry on the "1837 On-Line" site.

Clues: The 1851 Census for William & Sarah Selway shows no sons at home, but 3 daughters who would be in the child-bearing age bracket by 1860. They are Louisa, Harriet and Emma. Perhaps Frederick was an illegitimate son of one of the daughters, and was brought up by his grand-parents.

Can anyone help with this mystery.
Thanks, John Gambrill

Thanks Diane,
I have myself pondered whether this Frederick Selway birth record of Jan-Mar 1861 in Wellington, SOM is the one I'm looking for. Up to now I've held off ordering a birth certificate as the date of birth and place of birth do not match the Census of Apr1861. The census has age=1, and place of birth as Withycombe Raleigh, Devon.

Anybody got any further info or suggestions before I take the plung and order the Birth Certificate.

John

It might be worth contacting the Online Parish Clerk for Withycombe Raleigh via Genuki website - if you go to Devon section and then genealogy, you will find details of the scheme.

It may be that they have records for 1861 but they might only hold parish records up to 1837 when civil registration came in.
