Does anyone have any futher information on the family of Henry Ward? I know he was baptised in Harleston on 12 Oct 1823 and after the war moved to Aldershot. He was the son of James Ward & Mary Reeve (married in Harleston 10 April 1823- possibly a 7 month baby ;)) I believe and I have a James Ward born in Weybread Suffolk (family all moves to Harleston) in Feb 1804. I'm wondering if my James Ward is Henry's dad.
Would appreciate anyones thought on this.

Hello
No answer I'm afraid, but a passing thought - is this all the same Harleston? i.e. the Harleston in Suffolk or the Harleston in Norfolk.

Hi Geoffers,
To the best of my knowledge its all the Harleston in Norfolk, right on the Suffolk border though. Just to the East of Diss. Henry Ward is definately a Norfolk man as he is supposed to be the first Norfolk man ever to win the VC. My Ward family were from Harleston & Redenhall in Norfolk/ Weybread in Suffolk.
(And there's hundred's of them, )

Hi
I'm not sure if this Old News, but Henry Ward spent his last years in Malvern and the Library there has produced a booklet about him. It seems that there is/was an historical society in Harleston, Norfolk and there is a reference to the late Mrs K Newby of the society: so it may still be going. There is also a reference to Miss M Andrew, living in Australia who is Henry's great-granddaughter.
Hope this may help.
Peter

I've had a browse through the 1841 census for Harleston, Redenahll and Starston. Loads of Wards, but no James or Henry - similar story for the 1851 census, sorry.
It may be a case of having to trawl the parish registers to try and identify all the Ward families and to see how many James Wards there were as fathers around this time.

Thanks Peter & Geoffers,
I'll get in touch with Harleston FHS and see what they have - thank you for that as I didn't know about them, have only just started on my Ward side of the family.
Census - well things are never that easy are they :) . Thanks for looking.

There's an entry for him on Wikipedia (migrated from the VictoriaCross.net site) here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Ward which may give you some more leads, and according to the website for the location of graves of VC winners, he is buried in Great Malvern Cemetery. The gravestone or cemetery register may tell you more also.
