Employer as marriage witness

Would it be unusual for an employer to be a marriage witness to their employee?

I wouldn't have thought so, as anyone can be a witness. Possibly the employer was a witness, because the employee asked, or didn't have anyone of his/her own to do so? There could be all sorts of reasons.
