Okay! Are you all ready for this?

On what day and date in 1934, did H.M.S. Hermes leave Portsmouth for the China Station?

The prize for the first correct answer posted here, is a brand new, ACDB CD of Dougal's Unclaimed Money Register, 1910.

I will not respond to this thread until I see the correct answer, okay?

Last I heard she had gone to bed and left us to it.

Maybe that's not a bad idea. Nite Nite;)

How come I'm having difficulty finding the information, and yet you seem to have jumped in with ??the right answer! If you are correct that is. ;) I've searched and searched, and found everything bar the day and month!! Sigh! Mind you, I'm probably wasting my time anyway, although it's been a good exercise.

Good luck Jeeb....I suspect you are right! :)

Okay! I know I said I wouldn't respond until someone came up with the correct answer but........I want someone to win.

I know the exact date the ship sailed as my Father in Law was on board (Chief Stoker) and he kept a diary.

You lot are really good at digging up facts, so you MUST be able to find the right date.

One little clue I will give you, is that the month of November is correct.

I have to thank my granddad for that.
He was out in China in 1900 with Jellicoe (family story says granddad was one of about 4 men who helped save Jellicoe's life at one point), and I couldn't find HMS Centurion on the 1901 census, but I was able to trace her return via The Times Digital Archive. Once I'd remembered that, finding the correct date was a doddle. :)
PM on its way, thank you Bo Peep.

Oh, well done Pam! congrats on winning AND on reminding us how to research. I totally forgot about the Times Digital Archive as a source even though I have found/ been found great stuff about my ancestors.

what a great outcome!

Thank you Ann.
I confess that I was busy googling away (like I suspect everyone else was!), then I remembered the message posted on the forum about trying a different search engine, so I tried Yahoo. It was only then that I suddenly had the flash of inspiration about the Times.
The Times has a lot of ships' arrivals and departures - both naval and passenger - as well as lots of ships named in adverts, saying when they will leave which port.

Well done :D

It just goes to show that we all need to be reminded about different avenues of research doesn't it?

We are never too clever to be reminded about things

Hi Betsy,

Oh, that is a shame. Never mind, you can always try the second competition.

I shall set up a third competition in a few days - just as soon as I can find a question which might take you clever clogs more than a couple of days to find the answer to!

To Glenys and Nicos - thank you for your good wishes.

To AnnB - definitely ironic, wasn't it? Though as I said earlier, it was only when I suddenly thought about my granddad coming back from China in HMS Centurion and being able to trace his journey back through reports in the Times that I had the lucky break. Otherwise I'd still be looking! (Though I had considered sending in entries for all the dates in November! :D :D )

To Ladkyis and everyone else - it is amazing what is reported in the papers. One of my favourites is about the egg-laying trials (different hens being fed different feeds in varying quantities) which ended with something like 'visitors are welcome on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 2 and 4pm'.
In the Times I've been able to follow someone through school and uni because he excelled at sport, and the paper reported the 'sports day' successes. (Though admittedly he didn't go to yer bog-standard secondary school.:) ) Later the Times reported his progression through the naval ranks till he ended up as an Admiral.

To Betsy, here's hoping the storm only inconvenienced you and didn't do any actual damage. I remember (many!) years ago we had a power failure in the winter so mum and I sat playing ludo by candlelight. Luckily we had a coal fire to keep warm by.

And finally - I've just realised that I'm the winner of a world-wide competition.:D:D And so will everyone else be who wins one of Bo Peep's competitions. Now there's something to tell my, and your, grandchildren! (No use telling my daughter. All she'll say is her standard response - 'Mother, you're weird.' :) )

To which, no doubt your response is "and you're my daughter, which makes you...............?"

Congratulations, Pam - well deserved
