Hi, I'm Reg I live near Southend Essex and have been researching my family for about 3 years. I'm a member of the Essex FHS and the SOG. Have done most of the census search etc on the net but now the harder part at the various register offices around the country and the SOG for parish records etc.,

I'm one of the unlucky ones who seem to have most of his family in areas that the records are only in county record offices to their relevant areas so have to travel to Norfolk & Cumberland which limits how far I can get at a stiiing.

So far I have traced the Jacobs back to the 1600's in Oxfordshire, The Emerson/emmerson's to early 1700's in Norfolk and the Skelton's to the late 1700's in Cumberland. (they were the hardest part as I never knew any of my fathers family).

Genes Reunited have been a major help in tracing living family that I never knew exsisted and filling in some of the gaps that you come across and would recomend anyone who has never used that site to join. My latest find on Genes Renunited was the family of one of the Emerson's that emigrated to Australia in the early 1800's which explains why I could find no trace of him in any of the census records.

Reg

The Emerson/emmerson's to early 1700's in Norfolk

I saw the name and wondered if it was Norfolk.

We've split Norfolk up into several areas. If you get stuck at all with anything for your Emersons, post a message on one of these forums:

Good luck and welcome

Thanks to you both, I traced the Emmerson's back to late 1700 in Stibbard and then to early 1700 in the next village Fulmodeston, but thats where the trail ends.

I note that the Michaelmas 1664 Hearth Tax Returns for Hindolveston (TNA doc E179/154/707 - current memberane 16 but originally membrane 10) records:

Guist - Amy EMERSON, widow taxed on 1 hearth

Guist to Fulmodeston and Stibbard is not that far - maybe worth checking the registers there?

Have you tried NROCAT and also the Norfolk Surnames List?
