Hi

I have a problem I need some help. My wife..... No! No problem there!

I have come across info on IGI which shows a number of IDE marriages taking place in East Lavant, Sussex. For example:-

Henry IDE married Mary MACKERELL 21 Oct 1673 at East Lavant, Sussex

Today I have been informed that on the Boyd's Marriage Index, there is an entry:-

"1673", "IDE", "Hen", "MACKRELL", "Mary", "Chelborough, East", "Dorset"

I haven't had sight of any original documents. Any ideas would be appreciate.

Regards

Phil

First move is to view the relevant parish register or failing that Bishop's Transcript, there is no point in hypothesising on the details without checking the original entries.

I say this as the IGI sometimes contains entries of banns rather than entries of marriage, it could be coincidence that four people with the same names married in the same year, it could be that errors have been made in the indexing or transcripts.

The list is virtually endless view the originals before further action.

Hello Phil

Even (especially) anyone from the LDS will warn you that the accuracy of the IGI can be very variable. Some of the data are thoroughly checked and have very few errors (no transcription is error-free) other enties in the IGI are "as good as grannie's memory": mine is no exception, I'm having those senior moments occur more frequently.

Always go back to the original source or film if you possibly can.

Good luck

Colin

That particular IGI entry is shown as "Form submitted by a member of the LDS Church." Most genealogists rate that phrase as being equivalent to "completely unreliable".

If however it had said "controlled extraction" it could reasonably be treated as "as good as any transcription is likely to be".

Let us know what you conclude from the PR itself.

Hi Phil,

I'm agreeing with Colin, Guy & Peter that you need to check originals to be absolutely sure. But it does seem odd. If it helps this is from the Sussex Marriage Index,

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: East Lavant, West Sussex, Date: 21 Oct 1673:
Subject: Henry IDE
Spouse: Mary MACKERELL

I would check out that Dorset one though. Probably an error in the transferance of information on Boyds.
