The British Library has a project putting examples of regional accents online

http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/search/advanced.cfm?objectPage=type

If you select "Recorded Speech" as the object type and the name of your chosen County as your keyword you will be given a list of accents from various parts of that County.

Hearing the accent may help to explain why a name has been "mispelled" by officials particularly when the owner of the name is far from home :D

Thanks Sue,

a case of serendipity here :D

Just this morning I was wondering to myself what a Lancashire accent sounded like - and how my granddad could pass himself off so well as a Scot (apparently just by rolling his 'r's a lot). He would have had a strong Irish influence as well, from his family.

I had a listen to the samples, it would be pretty easy to fool me :D
