Hi
I believe there are a number of published sources for both the clergy, and
the alumni of Oxford & Cambridge, which give some genealogical detail (even
if just a father's name). I have no experience of these, so would be
grateful if anyone could either point me towards such a source or do a
lookup for me. I have found a couple of sources (below) but am hoping there
may be more.
I have the probate of Raph WHITE of Sheldon, Derbyshire from 1673 which
names his son (Francis WHITE of Monyash, Derbyshire), as well as a William
WHITE of Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire. No relationship is given for
William, but as he has the same surname there is a
good chance they were related.
Struggling to make much definite headway on Raph, I thought I'd take a look
at William and see if he led to any clues. It appears the minster at
Chapel-en-le-Frith was a William WHITE from 1670 to 1695. Obviously I don't
know that this is the same William, but a small word after his name in the
latin part of Raph's probate does look like it could be "dom" which I
believe was sometimes used as some sort of religious title.
I've managed to find out (via the Clergy of the Church of England database
at http://eagle.cch.kcl.ac.uk:8080/cce/persons/) that William was ordained
in 1669, and that he went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. I then found a
database of Cambridge alumni on ancestry.co.uk which provided this....
Name: William White
College: EMMANUEL
Entered: 1665
More Information: Adm. pens. at EMMANUEL, May 11, 1665. Of Derbyshire.
Matric. 1665; B.A. 1668-9; M.A. 1672.
Are there any other clergy (or alumni) sources that I should be checking?
Many thanks
Mark
