Service in India 1941

My grandfather served in India as a young man in 1945, I have a couple of old photographs of him with members of his regiment and on the back of one is written W?/T Maintenance Section. He was born and lived in the Sheffield are of Yorkshire and I would like to try and find out more about his military service.
I have no idea where to begin looking for further information so any help would be appreciated.

Recent army records are still held by the MoD. Click on the link below and you'll find an address to which you can make an application

However, - records are normally only produced to the serviceman concerned or next of kin - so if your dad is still alive, you'll need to either have him apply, or to write a letter of authority allowing details to be released to you. For RN records, you also need to supply some proof of your relationship (e.g. birth certificate), I would presume that the same applies for Army records.

Thankyou Geoffers for your reply,I will have to look into this further especially in regards to the next of kin as my nannan is still alive but probably unable to give authorisation.

EmmaIf your grandmother is still alive but unable to give authorisation, someone would have her power of attorney or guardianship. That person/group would be legally able to provide authorisation in these circumstances. Also, she would probably be getting a military pension as a result of your grandfather's military service - the guardian should be able to give reference numbers from the pension cheques for you to at least determine his soldier's number and regiment from the pension-issuing office. Just some further thoughts to assist.

Tanks Terry, I hand't thought abpout looking through the pensions side of things but I should be able to do that relatively easily. The power attorny is still ebing sorted but I should hopefully be able carry on at the time it comes through.
