GEORGE ELSON was born in 1835 and I would like to obtain his birth certificate. The 1881 census reports that he was born in Devonport and he was a Chelsea Pensioner. In the 1891 census it reports that his birthplace was Cheriton. On both censuses his occupation shows Chelsea Pensioner and the family details are the same so I can assume that they are the same Elson.
As this misses the 1837 deadline I am now looking in parish registers and as Devon isn't on my doorstep I wondered if anyone could offer any information.
I have his marriage certificate dated 1875 in Woolwich London and his father was JOHN, however, no address details for the father on the m/cert.

Have you tried Hugh Wallis's site?

There is a George Elson b Cheriton Fitzpaine in 1832

I checked that out thanks. It looks promising as the father was correct, (not any info on mother as yet) however the date is a bit early; all the following info I have does suggest 1835 is nearer. I would be interested to see how far apart these parishes are around Devonport.
Would you know if further info can be obtained from the IGI batch number in any way?

Cheriton Fitzpaine is at the opposite end of the County to Devonport (now part of Plymouth)

The confusion over birthplace may have arisen if the family moved to Devonport when he was very young. There was a great deal of building work in and around the Dockyard as well as the need for Dockyard Labourers so many of the people living in Devonport/East Stonehouse came from elsewhere.

It may be worth checking if the Devon FHS have what you need, many baptisms have been indexed.

I have taken a look at the devonfhs site thanks and there is a wealth of information. It will take me some time to work thru. I noticed that there are two Cheritons but as they have maps of the parishes I will start there.
Once again thanks for the lead.
