A few days ago I noticed a posting from a fellow New Zealander. I checked her profile to see whereabouts she lived and a surname on her research list caught my eye. It was the same as a person I worked with 30 years ago. So, I sent a private message to ascertain whether or not it was the same person - it wasn't but she had come across my surname many years ago. She gave me some information and a couple of addresses to contact - lo and behold I now have a pictures of this TUSON and details of his life. previously it was only a name in my database.

This was a huge stroke of good fortune but significantly to me shows the immense value from being a member of the Forum and the unselfish attitude of its members - willing to help, share knowledge and offer advice.

A big thanks to Bo-peep for encouraging new members to provide lots of detail about themselves and their interests

Many thanks to all
David

That is great news, David.

Now, if only everyone would fill in their profile information, who knows how many more people could have success stories.

I also belong to the Talking Scot forum and members' research names/places (provided they have put any in!) appear on the bottom of each post they make. That way people can see them and PM anyone who may be researching the same names. Would that be possible on BG?

eg

Researching: Smith, Brown, White, Black:LONDON; Bloggs, Goofy: OUTER MONGOLIA

Interesting idea of having the names research field included in the signature block. Not sure if it can be done though, depends on the program and database used.

Neil

Researching
Wilson - Ashover and Clay Cross in Derbyshire
Bacon - Clay Cross
Woodhouse - Matlock and Clay Cross

I used to have my research names in my signature, but I've a feeling we were asked to reduce the size of our signatures when the old server was playing up. In any case, it was something that I wrote myself, rather than being done automatically by the forum software. And personally I think that's the way it should be.

ArthurGood point Arthur, I forgot about the size issue, but if it was a Dynamic Signature, ie a link to the database rather than written in to every message it might be different. I think this needs a techie type of answer, please someone?
