I would realy appreciate some help re Edward Andrew Opie, born 1809/10, father Richard. Don't know where born? Both artists. There seems to be a lot of Edwards & artists. Mine married a Mary Jane Devonshire in 1838 & emigrated to England. Lots of assistance received for the Australian section, but now need help for English side

Thank you giveover; I neglected to say that I have found a copy of the marriage certificate, giving his address as Paris Street. And aren't I silly they didn't emigrate to England, they came to Australia. Finding where he was born and info on Richard is proving difficult.

This would seem to be Edward in the 1851 census:

Census: 1851: HO107/1916 Folio 78 Page 72
Address: Commercial Square, Camborne, Cornwall
-- Matthew Oatfield Head Mar 28 Grocer [born] Cornwall St. Ives
-- Jane Do Wife Mar 26 [born] Middlesex Finsbury
-- James Poole Do Son 9 mo. [born] Cornwall Camborne
-- Elizabeth Robarts Serv. U 21 House Serv [born] Do Crowar
-- Edward Opie Lodger Mar 40 Portrait Painter [born] Do St. Agness

No Mary Jane...

Oh, I think this has got to be Edward's father, Richard, and the rest of the family:

Census: 1851: HO107/1880 Folio 75 Page 24
Address: 40, Chapel Street, East Stonehouse
-- Richard Opie head mar 60 Portrait Painter [born] Cornwall ?Falmouth?
-- Agness Do Wife mar 56 [born] Do Prior
-- Agness Jane Do Daughter U 25 Milliner [born] Do ?Falmouth?
-- Horatio Do Son U 23 Portrait Painter [born] Devon East Stonehouse
-- Carolyn Do Daughter U 17 Dress Maker [born] Do Do

Now where's Mary Jane???

Edward Opie in 1841:

Census: 1841: HO107/276 Book 6 Folio 25 Page 45

One has "romantic" visions of a starving artist living in a drafty garret painting portraits of wealthy patrons... but where's Mary Jane?

And Richard and family:

Census: 1841: HO107/154 Book 5 Folio 40 Page 23

-- Alfred do 10 N
-- Evelyn do 7 N
-- Archibald do 4 N

Edward in 1861:

Census: 1861: RG9/1591 Folio 21 Page 13
Address: Fore Street, Marazion, Cornwall
-- Edward Opie Head Mar 50 Artist [born] Cornwall St. Agnes

Sigh... still no Mary Jane.

Edward in 1871:

Census: 1871: RG10/293 Folio 7 Page 7
Address: 19 Grosvenor Road, Islington, London
-- Edward W. Hoare Head Mar 38 Commer. Traveller Tea Trade [born] Middlesex St. Pancras
-- Caroline Wife Mar 40 [born] Do Edgwall
-- Children listed...
-- Two servants listed...
-- Edward Opie Boarder Mar 60 Artist [born] Cornwall St. Agnes
-- Louis Halle Do Unm 43 Do [born] Francfort Oxmaine

I'm beginning to wonder if I've got the right Edward. This one is still in England in 1871 at the age of 60...

Oh, oh... here's Edward in 1881 with wife Margaret:

Census: 1881: RG1/2091 Folio 68 Page 9
Address: 5 Braidwood Ter, Plymouth St. Charles The Martyr
-- Edward Opie Head Mar 70 Artist - Portrait [born] Cornwall St. Agnes
-- Margaret H. Do Mar 61 [born] Do St. Ives
-- Susannah Stanlake Serv. Unm 25 General Serv. Domestic [born] Do Camelford

Back to the drawing board, I guess.

Hi Trish, Haven't you been busy. Unfortunately the Edward you have found may be a cousin- he seems to have been born around the same time as mine, but he stayed in England, mine came to Australia, and the family knows what happened to him out here.( If they'd been born in this era I'd say they were one & the same, with a wife on two continents, but in the 1800's I'd think it unlikely!! ha,ha) Your Edward married a Margaret Hocking, but don't seem to have had much time living together, or so it seems from the censuses.

Believe me Jenny you have found his Parents Richard and Agnes Andrews and the other Edward referred to here was the nephew of John Opie (1761-1807) known as The Cornish Wonder. This is my first time of using a forum. However for the benefit of other readers census of 1841 Richard Opie's son Richard was a Carver and Gilder, and subsequent descendants of Richard Opie were also Artists or Portrait Painters. If you Jenny study my tree on Ancestry you will find his Father Richard, an artist and Portrait Painter, (1796-1864) and Agnes (1796-1893) also his Grandfather Richard.
