I've been researching family and local history for 10 years.

However, I'm currently stuck on how to determine where my grandfather was posted and/or fought in WW1. I have his medal card which reads Royal Engineers, Signaler, roll I23, IGS/W/R Signals/2-87, Cl.Way 1921-24. He was on the India Unattached List, but I'm not convinced he ever went to India. I know he was also in the cavalry and he talked about sleeping with his horse to keep warm. In 1938 he visited the battlefields of the Northwest front, but was this just curiosity or did he spend time there during WW1? He wouldn't talk about it.

Underneath in a separate box on the medal card it reads I.V.B 1442, 19 Nov 1945, p/191310/1. I think he served as a fireman in WW2.

Can anyone help me please.

Hi Jane,

I would suggest you post your information here. A very helpful and knowledgable site:

The National Archives (TNA) in London has research guides to records it holds
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1
scroll down to B and look at entries prefixed 'British Army'

Pension records and the 'Burnt Documents' (Service records which were damaged in WW2) are being put online at Ancestry. These may provide information to help you.
